Florida is best-known for its pristine beaches, delightful sun, and crisp sea breeze. But if you’re not a fan of getting tan, or if you just like to take the road less traveled, take a look at some of the best things to do in the Sunshine State that don’t involve “going to the beach.”
1. Visit an amusement park
Florida loves its amusement parks, and so do the tourists. But if you pick a less-busy time to go to a theme park, like weekdays in June, you can meet Mickey Mouse without waiting in line for three hours. If you’re traveling with a large group or family, Disney World is your best bet for a ton of character action. But, if you’re flying solo or going with a friend or a date, consider Busch Gardens or Universal Studios, where there’s more adult fun like zoo animals, shows, and high-speed roller coasters.
2. Visit a museum
Stay out of the heat and visit one of Florida’s outstanding museums, like the Dali Museum in St. Pete. The Dali even offers yoga if you arrive at the right time, and there’s a large tree out back to hang your wishes on. For a less-traditional museum experience, check out Ernest Hemingway’s home in the Keys. Tours are only $15 per person, and there’s a hefty discount for groups.
3. Get up-close with big cats
The idea of going to a zoo is fun, but actually going is another story. Sometimes zoos have small, sad enclosures, and the animals aren’t well-kept. But at the Big Cat Rescue in Tampa, you can see rescued wild animals up close and support a wonderful cause. The Big Cat Rescue is “the largest accredited sanctuary in the world dedicated to abused and abandoned big cats,” according to their site. The rescue even offers exciting night tours guided only by a flashlight.
4. Meet a mermaid
Okay, so maybe big cats aren’t your thing. But who can say no to meeting a mermaid? Weeki Wachee offers mermaid shows for all ages, like The Little Mermaid live in a 400-seat submerged auditorium. The association also offers boating and kayaking trips, so you can fit in a day on the water with your mermaid-watching.
Florida might be home to some of the world’s best beaches, but the Sunshine State is more than just that. Whether you meet a mermaid or discover Hemingway’s home in the Keys, there’s always something new to explore in Florida.
