We’re sure you know what a snowbird is, but in case you don’t, a snowbird is a person who moves from the north to warmer southern climates in the winter. Most people think the only snowbirds are retirees with money to spare, but the truth is there are plenty of affordable destinations for people who want to escape the winter chill. Best of all, they’re not all in Florida.
Here are five affordable winter destinations we think are worth a visit.
Pahoa, Hawaii
You may think Hawaii is too expensive to visit, especially during the winter. However, Tripping ranks Pahoa as the fifth most affordable snowbird destination in the U.S. Located on Hawaii’s Big Island, not far from Hilo Airport, it’s an easy place to get to. Not only that, but there are a lot of things to do there: enjoy Hawaii’s famous beaches, tour a coffee plantation in Kona, go out for a hike (maybe up nearby Kilauea, if it’s not erupting), or just chill out with a book on your lanai and enjoy the warm weather.
Bella Vista, Arkansas
Located in the northeast corner of Arkansas, Bella Vista ranks number one in the state when it comes to affordable vacation rentals for snowbirds. If you’re an outdoorsy type, you can enjoy the miles of trails and streams for a casual day hike. If you’re not so into hiking, you can still enjoy the vast, untouched natural beauty of the city and the areas surrounding it.
Tucson, Arizona
The Wall Street Journal characterized Tucson as a “mini mecca for the arts” because of its vibrant arts scene and fascinating cultural history. This city is a favorite for snowbirds because of the warm, dry weather and affordable rentals. If you’re in Tucson in February, be sure to check out the famous Tucson Gem and Mineral Show; if you’re a rockhound, you’ll find some great natural crystals and stones there.
Hilton Head Island, South Carolina
Snowbirds could do a lot worse than spending a winter on Hilton Head Island. Not only is it an affordable destination, it’s home to great beaches, parks, restaurants, and golf courses. Visit the Harbour Town Lighthouse and Museum, or check out the Coastal Discovery Museum to learn about heritage buildings, trees, and themed gardens. The nearby Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge salt marsh hosts deer, birds, and alligators.
Anaheim, California
If you’re looking to winter on the West Coast, Anaheim is a good place to be. Just outside of Los Angeles, the city is home to Disneyland, Angel Stadium (home to the Los Angeles Angels baseball team), and the Honda Center (home of the Anaheim Ducks hockey team). You can also find arts and culture there in the form of the Anaheim Ballet, the Orange County Symphony, the Anaheim Art Gallery, and lots more.
So, snowbirds, if you haven’t started your winter vacation plans yet, check out one of these five destinations and enjoy the warmth—both in terms of temperature and hospitality—of a southern or Pacific island winter.
