Women looking to travel abroad solo are often dissuaded by worried family members and friends. And rightfully so. In fact, Travel.State.Gov warns that “… when it comes to health and security, women travelers are more likely to be affected by religious and cultural beliefs of the foreign countries they visit.”
But while there is real danger that lies in many countries, especially for women, it shouldn’t be a reason not to explore the world. If you’re a woman looking to travel solo for the first time, don’t bin your travel plans just yet. (And if you’re a man who has a female family member or friend looking to travel—embolden her!)
Just practice being aware of your surroundings and choose one of these three places best for solo female travelers to get started on your journey abroad.
1. Reykjavik, Iceland
Okay, so maybe Reykjavik wasn’t on your bucket list before, but it should be. It’s the “epicenter of life and culture of Icelandic people as well as one of the country’s focal points of tourism,” according to Trekeffect. Not only is it the perfect jumping-off spot for the Northern Lights and Blue Lagoon, but it’s safe, too. So safe, in fact, it earned its spot as No. 1 on the Global Peace Index in 2015.
2. Copenhagen, Denmark
As a woman traveling solo abroad, relying on transportation such as taxis can be a bit scary. Luckily, Copenhagen puts transportation in your hands by being one of the most bikeable cities in the world. And in Copenhagen, renting a bike is painless. City dwellers and travelers on bikes are welcome to wander the city, on cobblestone streets and in between cozy alleyways, to explore the best culinary delights and breathtaking landscape Denmark has to offer.
3. Seoul, South Korea
They call New York City the city that never sleeps, but Seoul’s got it beat. Even in the wee hours of the morning, Seoul’s main streets are often full of bright lights and people. There are even a few women-only spas, like Spai Lei, waiting for you to indulge in a body scrub or massage. Not into the whole spa thing? There’s also a ton of expatriate culture in Korea, complete with get-togethers to meet other solo travelers, so solo female travelers don’t need to feel so alone in their adventures.
The thought of traveling alone as a woman can be pretty intimidating. But choose one of the three places above, and you’ll feel safe and at home.
