The art world is notorious for its lack of diversity, with most celebrated names being dead European men. This article is dedicated to celebrating contemporary artists from Sri Lanka, an island nation located off the southeast coast of India.
1. Aruni Dharmakirthi
Aruni Dharmakirthi is a gender-neutral artist whose work is often described as “new media.” Their signature creations blend digital art with cultural fabrics, lending a unique perspective into how tradition, culture, and modern technology intersect with one another. Their works have been shown both nationally and internationally in galleries such as Disjecta in Portland, Oregon and Sonam Studios in Mumbai, India.
Dharmakirthi holds a BA in Studio Art and Art History from Florida State University along with an MFA in Visual Studies from the Pacific Northwest College of Art (PNCA).
2. Lakisha Fernando
Lakisha Fernando is a feminist artist who centers her work on the theme of intimacy. She uses photographs, objects, written texts, and paintings to create multidimensional pieces that transcend the usual confines of art. She is best known for her fiber collection, in which she uses needlework, embroidery, and lace to highlight an art form that is traditionally associated with women.
Fernando is a member of the Theertha International Artists Collective, a nonprofit organization that hosts free art workshops in Sri Lanka.
3. Raja Segar
Raja Segar is a self-taught artist and sculptor whose work is both dynamic and impactful. His abstract and figurative paintings touch on themes of race, gender, and class in a way that is subtle and intriguing. His sculptures, which are usually cast in steel, are both thought provoking and enthralling.
Segar has received international acclaim, with his work being shown in countries such as Australia, England, India, and Singapore.
One can only hope that featuring artists like these will lead to a more diverse and inclusive art sphere. It’s time to level the playing field so that those from underrepresented minority groups can share the spotlight.
